Weir Minerals unveiled the 2nd generation of the WGR® slurry pump at an official launch day on Wednesday 11th October at its plant in Yateley, Hampshire, United Kingdom. The 2nd generation WGR® pump boasts several innovative features including fully replaceable liners designed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation that provide a significantly improved performance over the first generation WGR® pump. The liners and impeller are manufactured from premium Linatex® rubber and housed within robust casing halves. Enhancements to the casing design simplify maintenance and minimise downtime. Other new features include the introduction of an expeller gland seal for optimum performance, as well the option of having a low flow packed gland and the unique D gland seal. An independent French company, designed to develop mining projects in Africa in the respect of the environment and local communities, has announced that operations have commenced at its flagship bauxite mine in Guinea. Alliance Minière Responsable (AMR) , which was founded over 4 years ago develop a mining production with the highest standards regarding the environment and the local communities, officially started production across its research permit in the Boke prefecture of Guinea Conarky. The company has targeted a production total between 6 and 10 million tonnes of bauxite over the nest two years. The total production estimate for the entirety of the operation`s life of mine, which is 15 years, could be as much as 150 million tonnes. Guinea is the first country in the world for its bauxite reserves, and the second largest producer of alumina behind Australia. [Guinea has the biggest world reserves of bauxite and the best quality in the world. But like many sectors in Guinea, the mining industry is very much under developed," says Romain Girbal CEO of AMR. [We saw this as a great opportunity. Over the last 5 years some big players of the bauxite industry arrived in Guinea and therefore now some very serious companies like SMB got into production or some companies like ALUFER or GAC are about to start producing. A copper gold project, located in the south of Canada, could move one step closer to production as an environmental review of the operation has been completed. The Ajax Mine, located south of Kamloops in Canada, is a new open pit copper and gold mine that could produce up to 99,000 ounces of gold annually over a 23-year life of mine. KGHM Ajax Mining, a Canadian mining company with a footprint that stretches across Canada, Greenland and Poland, looks to develop the Ajax Mine into a world class mine that is safe, profitable and environmentally responsible. The mine itself has already been opposed twice before and with the B.C Environmental Assessment office completing its review and handed it over to provincial government, KGHM has until 4 January 2017 at the very latest to receive a final decision. Should the mine get the all important go ahead, KGHM will look to create more than 500 jobs and generate upwards of $500mn in estimated tax revenue.

A leading Canadian copper producer has unveiled pans for an optimised underground mine operation and appointed a new Chief Operating Officer in the process. Nevada Copper, owners of the fully permitted and shovel ready Pumpkin Hollow deposit, has announced a development plan to [swiftly advance" the Pumpkin Hollow deposit, targeting a mid-2019 production date. A pre-feasibility study at the site has just been completed, which confirms Pumpkin Hollow as a large scale open pit and underground project with reserves of 5 billion pounds of copper, 0.76 Mozs of gold and 27.6 Mozs of silver. The study also revealed that the project, which stands to date as the only fully-permitted copper project of scale in the United States, will only require a small $182mn in initial capital. Following the strong results from the feasibility study, Nevada Copper has also announced the immediate appointment of a Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in Phillip Day. Mr Day has significant project construction experience, overseeing a $1bn gold study for AngloGold Ashanti, worked in senior roles in AME Americas and BHP Billion to name but a few. [I am excited to join Nevada Copper. I see significant opportunities at Pumpkin Hollow, as we now have a robust underground project ready to advance into construction in the near term," said Day. [The ability to leverage the existing infrastructure and previous studies will allow us to significantly de-risk project development. Importantly, for the flagship Pumpkin Hollow Open Pit, I also see substantial scope for optimization and value creation that can be advanced in parallel with the near-term production from the underground mine."

A mineral resource company, with a specific focus on developing an African uranium portfolio, has been given a significant boost as it has received a permit for one of its flagship operations. Goviex, a Canadian uranium producer with a number of exploration and development operations in Niger, Zambia and Mali, has received an exploration permit for its Agaliouk exploration tenement. The Agaliouk tenement is expected to add around 11.67 million pounds of Uranium to the company`s overall Niger portfolio, as it sits adjacent to the current boundaries of its Madaoela Project.
